I love fresh Mackerel for Breakfast!

You cant beat fresh Mackerel for breakfast, I have not caught any locally yet as I have missed the season here, however in Devon an hour or so out in the boat with a line dragging behind kept us in Mackerel for the week normally.

Best way I like it is, once boned, flatten out and lay each side in flour, before frying for a few munites.

I love mackeral but find it oily. I prefer mine soaked in a vinegar/water mix for about an hour, then grilled served with salad and fresh crusty bread.

That reminds me of the way I used to cook them onboard when I was chartering. Fillet off each side … quick dab with a rag (preferably clean, however, what the eye don’t see etc) then sprinkle with coarse ground pepper … and straight under the grill. I can still taste them now after all those years … and nobody died of food poisoning … thank goodness.

Another way I used to do codling and pouting was to wrap them in newspaper, then soak and put them in the boats oven. When the newspaper dried … the fish was cooked and the skin came off on the paper … delicious.

And don’t get me started on hot crab claws … or I’ll buy another boat.
