Boat fishing queries

Postby CELOCANT » Mon Nov 02, 2009 4:55 pm

If anybody has any questions about local boat angling, perhaps I’m your man. My past incorporates over 40 years as a full time charter boat skipper, and up to last year I’ve owned a boat on Deal/Walmer beach since 1962. I still keep in contact with the skippers from Deal and Ramsgate and hopefully can help with any queries.

I have been having a bit of a sort out and today came across the NFSA South Eastern Division handbook published in 1979 to commemorate 75 years of the NFSA. Most of the content looks very dated particularly an article titled Thanet Rules OK. What I did notice was an article by the skipper of "Morning Haze" entitled- Boat Angling For Beginners- the content is as relevent today as it was back then. Unfortunately there is no picture of the Author with the Article !

That was possibly one of my first published literary works … I always felt that angling was so unpredictable it was a subject that I would not normally write about, nevertheless, when asked to contribute, I couldn’t resist.

The late Ron Edwards was chairman of the SE div NFSA and Pat Heath and I used to attend the meetings on behalf of the club. We were in the forefront of angling politics – protecting rank and file anglers from the becoming hard and fast professionals … remember it was an amateur sport that divided us from the commercials; therefore, money could not be involved. In those days if you earned money from fishing then you could not belong to the NFSA … or an angling club. I, had not only been a tackle dealer but also a professional boatman, was accused of being a pro, although my position was totally angling orientated. Definitely a martyr to the cause in those days … and as pure as driven snow … seriously!

Anyway, eventually the booklet was produced, nonetheless it did not sell. I think it was offered at 50p … but still did not sell. There was a vast surplus available and they were on offer to anybody who wanted them … free. Not sure how long it took the NFSA (SE Div) to recover financially, however (my favourite word) … the rest is history.

This is worrying you mean I should have kept a first edition J K Rowling to boost my pension fund rather than a pristine copy of the handbook. Doesn't seem to be any up on e bay so that might be a good sign.
