With high tide halfway through the match and perfect weather conditions it was on the cards that this was going to be a good one. From the start until the finish the action was nonstop. One angler described it as a ‘Roukes Drift’ moment as the fish kept on coming. The weigh-in seemed to go on forever as the 13 anglers brought their fish to the scales. These comprised of whiting, pouting, dogs and the occasional dab. The top three anglers, in this three hour comp, had an average of 45 fish apiece and their weights were so close that a fish either way was the crucial factor.
Dave Andrews’ winning weight of 10.640kg was being pushed with Steve Hackett’s 10.480kg and Dave (I need a bigger bucket) Chamberlain’s 10.370kg managed him third spot. It was down to Ken Withington, who normally specialises in a fish fest, to settle for fourth place with a credible 9.550kg and Robbie Taylor at fifth with 8.990kg of mixed. Heaviest fish went to local tackle dealer, Fred Leach, with a dog of .780g and heaviest flat, a dab of .200g, to Dave Chamberlain.
Roll on the slug (rockling) season for an easy life … only joking!
