At this time of year a bit of north -west wind puts plenty of colour in the sea at Deal, which is ideal conditions to encourage the fish to feed. Under these conditions Deal pier had been fishing well with a few codling being caught. This was why half of the 10 competitors fished it in the latest Deal Angling Club (1919) Pier/Beach match. The other half tried the beach from Sandown to Walmer, although the tide was dead low. The fish cooperated on all of the venues and a good weight of 8.710kg was caught by Brian Smith fishing Walmer. Brian’s first cast brought in a dogfish and he continued to work on the pack for the rest of the three hour comp. Tim Flagg was just ousted into second place with 8.040kg and Fred Leach, fishing the pier came third with 7.760kg. Fred mustered a 20 plus fish catch which consisted of whiting and dogs. Fourth spot went to Ben Hackett’s 6.250kg and he managed the heaviest fish, a dog of 720g, in his catch. Dave Andrews, fishing the 4th Green, bagged-up 5.030kg of mixed dogs and whiting to be placed at fifth position. The only codling caught was by Luke Hutton who also had the heaviest flat, a dab of 140g. It goes to show that the fishing is that good when the lowest weight weighed-in was 3.190kg with that competitor coming last (me).

Well just one match to go on the Pier/Beach Championship for 2013 and time for an update on the points scores, there should be regarded as provisional as they haven't been checked yet.
1st Dave Andrews 74
2nd Luke Hutton 73
3rd Ben Hackett 58.5
4th Saul Page 58
5th Steve Hackett 56
6th= Tim Flagg 50.5
6th=Dave Chamberlain 50.5
8th John Green 49
However only the best 10 results for the year count for the championship so some anglers have 2 drop two results which can make considerable difference to the final placing's , the adjusted table of best 9 results which gives the true picture going in to the last match is below. With a maximum score of 15 points available that's 8 anglers in contention for a place on the podium and Luke Hutton in pole position for the title when battle resume on 3rd December.

1st Luke Hutton 71
2nd Dave Andrews 69
3rd Ben Hackett 58.5
4th Saul Page 58
5th Steve Hackett 53
6th Tim Flagg 50.5
7th John Green 49
8th Dave Chamberlain 47.5
