With a clear sea and reports of very little fish the competitors in the 1919 Pier/Beach three hour rover match were apprehensive but not disheartened. Suggestions for hotspots were bandied about without a solution and the beaches as well as the pier had a selection of anglers at the start of the event.

Kingsdown seemed to produce the best results as Luke Hutton started the ball rolling with a dog on his first cast. From there on it was a battle between Dave Andrews and Luke on the dogfish front. Luke ended the session with a double shot of dogs on his last cast which produced the heaviest fish of the match, a dog of 870g. Although they equalled in the amount of fish, Dave Andrews’ were slightly larger and gave him second overall weight of 2.480kg, just beating Luke’s 2.280kg. However, it was left up to Tim Flagg to produce a seven dog catch for 3.910kg to win. Deal tackle dealer, Fred Leach, fishing the pier had two dogs and three pouts for fourth shot at 1.720kg and Brian Smith fifth with 970g. Heaviest flatfish was a flounder of 240g caught by Dave Chamberlain.
