Huss, Rig, Rock Salmon, LSDs. Gurnet, no matter what you call them they all boil down to one thing … dogfish. I do have another name for them, but it is normally uttered in private and under my breath. The noble (and gentle) art of tempting slugs and dabs onto size 6 hooks in the month of February is soon to be lost; as these spotted writhing masses of sandpapered anacondas are brought to the scales in their bucket loads. The dogfish is definitely here to stay as it almost dominates the weights throughout the competitors’ year in the matches.

Last night was no exception when the 16 anglers fished the three hour club rover match. Speculation was on how many dogfish it would take to win. Walmer and Kingsdown were the favoured marks, although the groynes did produce a few. Winner was Gillingham matchman Kirk Watson with a bag of dogs at 4.970kg just beating speed angler Luke Hutton’s 4.680kg. ‘Bad Back’ Tim Flagg was on form and managed third spot with 4.080kg. A few whiting and slugs made up the bags and a dab of 110g was enough to win John Green the heaviest flatfish pool. Brian Smith had the heaviest fish which was a dog of 910g.

Disclaimer: Any malice or vitriolic words aimed at dogfish in this report is purely hypothetical … it’s just that I can’t catch dogs!

Nice report Dave

Oh for the good old days of pout bashing- at least they were caught at 30 yards and at 4oz a go didnt do as much damage as a treble shot of dogs!

It’s all a bad dream Dave. They were quite localised last night, however, the groynes are making a comeback!
