At the latest 1919 rover beach match, the debate from the 21 anglers was to go north for the whiting or south for the dogs? However, when seven thornback rays turn up at the scales three hours later, I sometimes wonder if these canny competition anglers are better informed than M15.

The majority apparently plumbed for the 10th Green and combined skate with whiting and dogs. Saul Page showed yet again why he is a current England Team member with a 31 fish bag, which included a ray of 3.100kg for a total weight of 10kg. Second place went to non member Lee Page (no relation to Saul) with a 24 fish total of 9.230kg and third was Ken Watson’s 8.250kg bag which included the heaviest ray of the match at 4.460kg. Fourth and fifth place was Ken Withington who amassed an amazing 37 fish catch for 7.920kg (and also heaviest flat with a dab of 230g) and Brian Smith 7.320kg (two rays). Luke Hutton had the second largest ray at 4.090kg.

It is quite unusual to catch rays in those numbers at this time of year, however, it was speculated that the warm weather and light easterly breeze has brought them inshore. It just goes to show with angling, you never know what is going to be caught next … or if you have access to the jungle drums, maybe you do!
